Tentacle Media

This week we had a laundry list of requirements and techniques we had to tackle.

1.) Boolean some primitive objects together
2.) make a 2d shape planar (logo)
3.) revolve a curve
4.) extrude a closed shape along a path
5.) loft 2 or more curves to create a surface

I decided to consolidate all of them into one graphic for a fictional company I made up called "Tentacle Media."  I tried to think what the brand image would be for a company with a name as such.  The only real hassle I ran into was to remember to change the axis point when revolving a curve. Other than that I feel I got the basics for each technique down.  I decided to keep the materials bare because I want to revisit this project next week for my textures assignment.

Modeling with Primitive Shapes

Here is my first crack at 3D modeling with Maya.  After I got used to the interface I found it pretty easy to manipulate the shapes into what I wanted to make.  It felt like playing with Legos, which happen to be my all time favorite childhood toy.  There's some clipping in some places but I decided perfection was not the point of this assignment.  What were giving me trouble however were the materials.  I wasn't able to get the desired effects I wanted and the colors are all a little off.  That seems like something I would like to go back and touch up.

More Advertising Campaigns

These are campaigns that my partners and I created in our Portfolio II class this past semester.  During critique I received the highest combined score out of my entire class of around 25 students.  Much sleep was last over these campaigns, which is why I'm proud to put these up in my portfolio.

WEST CAMPUS STORIES FINAL VIDEO

I forgot to upload a compressed version of my final video. Here it is for the world to see. It got good reactions during the screening at the end of last semester and I am overall pleased the way it came out. Lot of hard work paid off.

PROJECT LAYOUT

The building blocks are here. I finally shot some footage and will be messing around with it in After Effects.
I am posting my progress thus far.  On the surface, it doesn't look like much, and I have a great deal of work to do between now and the deadline.  However, all of the pieces are available.

I have 2 comics roughed up and am planning to animate about 5 more along with transitions for the comics.  The trick at this point will be timing.  The high energy of the song needs to sync up perfectly with the flow of the footage so I will be playing around with that as well.  This video is just a glimpse at my progress and a rough visual representation of where I am going with it.

PREPRODUCTION: West Campus Stories

For my final project I would like to animate a couple of existing comics that I have drawn up and showcase them in a way that uses a number of techniques we've learned throughout the semester to cohesively put them together.  I plan to recreate a 3D image of the logo that I designed and animate it.  I also want to capture some street footage around west campus and speed up the footage so that it creates a fast paced atmosphere.    Below I have included some potential comics that I will be working with, all while animating the text and creating slight movement in the drawings themselves.  The entire 1:30 - 2 minute project will be set to music and should show off a little of the west campus experience.

This is the storyboard I will be working from.

Inspired by the Queens of the Stone Age music video "Go with the Flow," I wanted to try to create a visually appealing piece using only three tones.  Using the roto brush in After Effects, I created a matte around live footage to create the silhouette.  I did the same with the heads but this time I messed with the threshold to create a very contrasted simplified black and white. I didn't get the desired effect that I wanted but it fits well nonetheless.  I tried to keep the rotoscoping loose so I can give it a little style.

Energy Ball

We started working with particle systems in After Effects and I decided to tackle just a glowing orb and tried to see how elaborate and organic I could make it look.  I used a number of Vegas effects to create the streams, a burst effect in the CC Particle World, and a lens flare to top it off and give it some character. I promise it looks a lot better in After Effects and I'll try to reload a copy that isn't so grainy.

Caterpillar Crawl

This week's assignment was to animate text and this was the product. I tried to make a convincing crawl but had a hard time animating the text on the Y-axis.

Hand/Eye Cordination

Here are a couple of attempts at motion tracking. I drew a set of dots on my hand in sharpie and tracked them through After Effects. They didn't come out perfect but I was fairly pleased.

Robot Legs Walking

For this week's assignment we were required to use a number of new tools, such as parenting and nested compositions. I decided to tackle the rudimentary walk sequence that most animators begin with.  I need to work out a few kinks but this is the video as of the class deadline.

Twitter Jesus

I always wanted to do animation and this was my first real attempt at it. The assignment was to create a 10 second clip using After Effects, a program that I just started using a week ago. I'm still playing around with the lip synching but this is the product of working with a deadline.

Photoshop Image

This is an idea I've had floating around in my head for awhile. It's basically a personification of music notes.
